Mathematical Notation Sources
Primary standards and official documentation used to review Unicode symbols, LaTeX commands, MathML markup, accessibility, and software input instructions.
Source hierarchy
The site prefers sources in this order:
- a governing standard or official specification;
- official project or package documentation;
- official operating-system or application documentation;
- established institutional or textbook references;
- secondary explanations used only for context or comparison.
A source supports only the claims within its scope. For example, the Unicode Standard can establish character identity, but it does not prove that every application supports the same keyboard shortcut.

These sources are used for character identity, code points, mathematical properties, and distinctions between visually similar characters.
LaTeX and rendering
These sources are used for command syntax, package scope, rendering support, and portability warnings. A command supported by one renderer is not automatically described as universal LaTeX support.
MathML and accessible web mathematics
These sources are used for semantic web markup, browser-facing mathematics, and accessibility guidance. Accessibility claims should describe the tested representation instead of assuming that visual rendering alone is accessible.
Operating systems and applications
Platform-specific guides prioritize official Apple and Microsoft documentation for Character Viewer, Character Map, Unicode input, and equation editing. Because interface names and shortcuts can change, each substantive platform guide records what was reviewed and when.
How article citations work
Deeply reviewed guides declare source IDs in their editorial metadata. During the static build, those IDs are resolved against the maintained source catalog and rendered in a “How this guide was checked” section. Unknown source IDs fail validation. The same URLs are included in Article structured data as citations.
Verification limits
Standards establish syntax and identity, while application behavior remains version-sensitive. Mathematical definitions may also use different conventions across disciplines. When sources disagree or a convention is not universal, the page should state the limitation and show the alternatives rather than silently choosing one.
